Acoustic Panels — PET Felt and Slatted Timber Systems

Sound absorption is a mounting question as much as a material question. These systems are quoted with the air gap and the coverage percentage that produce the stated NRC.

PET acoustic panel wall installation

Acoustic Panels overview

An acoustic panel absorbs sound energy rather than blocking it. That distinction matters: a buyer who wants privacy through a wall needs mass and sealing, while a buyer who wants a room to stop ringing needs absorption on the surfaces. Half of the technical enquiries we receive are one problem described as the other.

Our range covers two families. Recycled PET felt panels are a soft, dense board available in 9 mm and 12 mm, workable with a knife and available in a wide colour range. Slatted timber systems pair MDF battens with a PET backing, and are the specification most designers choose when the wall has to look like timber.

The absorption coefficient depends on how the panel is mounted. Bonded flat to a wall, a slat system absorbs far less than the same panel fixed on battens with a 50 mm air gap. Our quoted figures are for the mounted condition stated in the schedule — insist on that context when comparing suppliers.

Please note: Always quote NRC with its mounting condition. An NRC figure without a stated air gap is not a specification.

Where it is used

  • Meeting rooms, boardrooms and open-plan offices
  • Restaurants, cafés and hotel lobbies
  • Home cinemas, studios and podcast rooms
  • Schools, libraries and gymnasia

How it is installed

  1. Measure the reverberation problem first: identify the room surfaces that reflect sound back to the listener.
  2. Cover 25–40% of the wall and ceiling area as a starting point; more coverage gives diminishing returns.
  3. Fix battens at 400 mm centres and mount the panels on them to create the air gap the NRC figure assumes.
  4. Leave a 10 mm shadow gap at the perimeter and keep panels clear of sprinkler heads and detectors.

Acoustic Panels — buyer questions

Will acoustic panels stop noise from the neighbours?

Not on their own. Absorption controls echo inside a room. Blocking sound from passing through a wall requires mass, decoupling and sealed perimeters. Most domestic noise complaints need both treatments, applied for different reasons.

How much wall do I need to cover?

For a typical office meeting room, 25–40% coverage on two adjacent walls removes most of the flutter echo. Beyond about 60% coverage the audible improvement is small and the cost is not.

Are PET panels suitable for a commercial kitchen or a wet room?

No. PET felt is porous and will hold grease and moisture. Use slat panels with a sealed surface, or a cleanable perforated metal system, in those environments.
