Wall panels for coffee shops and cafés
A café has two specification problems: it has to be finished on a lease timetable, and it has to stop sounding like a tiled box when it is full.

What this room demands
Reverberation is the defining complaint in a hard-surfaced café. Bare walls, hard floor and a full room produce a room people leave early. Absorption has to be specified into the finish, not added later.
Behind a counter the wall takes grease, steam and constant cleaning. Porous acoustic material fails there; a sealed slat system or a rigid panel wipes down.
Fit-out windows are short and the landlord expects handover on a date. Panels replace wet trades and are typically installed in days, not weeks.
Specification checklist
- Treat the ceiling and at least one wall for absorption, not the walls alone
- Specify sealed, cleanable finishes behind the counter and in the kitchen pass
- Confirm the acoustic coverage percentage so the treatment is measurable
- Check the fire classification required for a commercial food premises
- Plan signage, shelving and menu board fixings into the panel layout
- Order trims and accessories with the panels so the fit-out is not held up
Installation sequence
- Fix the acoustic strategy first — identify surfaces and coverage before choosing the finish.
- Set out the feature wall from the seating axis so the panel rhythm reads from the customer side.
- Install slat or 3D feature panels on battens with the specified air gap to achieve the absorption figure.
- Use sealed rigid panels behind the counter and in wet or greasy zones.
- Finish corners and counter junctions with trims, and seal all wet-zone joints.

Coffee Shop — buyer questions
What acoustic coverage does a café need?
Start at 30–40% of the total surface area, split between ceiling and wall, and reduce hard floor area if possible. A café with a full hard floor and bare walls needs the higher end of that range to feel comfortable when busy.
Can wood slat panels be used behind a counter?
Yes, if the surface is sealed and the slat gaps are closed. An open slat system with felt behind it will collect grease and is very hard to clean. Specify a sealed variant in that zone.
How fast can a café fit-out be completed with panels?
Wall cladding is typically a few days for a small unit, because there is no plaster drying time and no tiling. The long lead items are usually the counter and the services, not the wall finish.
