What this room demands
Water is the primary failure driver. Any outdoor cladding must be a drained and ventilated rainscreen — panels fixed directly to masonry trap moisture and fail at the fixings.
UV exposure over years, not months, decides colour retention. Only capped or co-extruded systems carry the UV-stable skin that resists greying.
Wet slip resistance matters on every walking surface. It is a specific test result for the surface profile, and a cleaning regime is part of maintaining it.
Specification checklist
- Specify a ventilated cavity — never bond exterior cladding directly to masonry
- Confirm the UV and colour-fastness test data for the finish, not the product family
- Check the wet slip test result for decking and pool surrounds
- Confirm the substructure material and corrosion class for the fixings
- Allow 3–5% extra for site damage on facades, plus a small stock for future repair
- Set out the drainage and flashing details before ordering panels
Installation sequence
- Fix the substrate and install the breather membrane and all flashing details first.
- Install vertical battens at 400–600 mm centres, maintaining a continuous drained cavity.
- Fix cladding panels with stainless clips from a set-out line, allowing movement at every abutment.
- For decking, set joists at 300–350 mm centres with 25 mm of ventilation below the boards.
- Finish all exposed ends with caps or trims so no composite core section is left open.

Outdoor — buyer questions
How long does WPC decking last outdoors?
We warrant 10 years against rot, split and termite attack. Realistically, a properly ventilated deck with stainless fixings lasts considerably longer. The failures we see trace back to blocked ventilation or carbon-steel fixings, not the board.
Does composite decking fade?
The colour lightens slightly through the first season and then stabilises. UV-stabilised pigments are graded 4-5 on the blue wool scale. It does not grey the way untreated timber does, and it never needs staining.
Can exterior cladding be installed in a coastal environment?
Yes, with stainless steel fixings of the correct grade and an annual wash to remove salt. Marine-grade fixings are the specification point that matters most — the panel itself handles the salt air.
