WPC Decking overview
A timber deck fails at the surface and at the fixings. Composite decking removes both failure modes: the board does not absorb water or feed insects, and concealed stainless clips replace the face-screwed nails that lift and streak timber decks.
Two board types cover most projects. Hollow boards are lighter, cheaper and suit residential terraces. Solid boards are heavier, feel more like timber underfoot, and are the right choice for commercial terraces and pool surrounds where a hollow board could be damaged by furniture or trolleys.
Slip resistance is the specification most often missing from a quotation. It matters particularly where a deck is wet and walked on — restaurant terraces, pool surrounds, hotel walkways. Ask for the wet slip test result rather than the product name, and check the cleaning regime, because a greasy surface defeats any slip rating.

How it is installed
- Set joists at 300–350 mm centres on a drained, ventilated substructure; never lay boards directly on soil or concrete.
- Allow at least 25 mm of ventilation under the boards and keep the deck clear of standing water.
- Fix boards with concealed clips, maintaining a 4–6 mm gap between boards and 10 mm at all abutments.
- Finish edges with the matching fascia board so the joist structure is never visible.
WPC Decking — buyer questions
Hollow or solid decking board?
Hollow for residential terraces and roofs where weight matters. Solid for commercial terraces, pool surrounds and anywhere furniture or trolleys will be dragged across the deck, because a solid board resists point loads and feels more substantial underfoot.
How do I check slip resistance?
Ask for the wet slip test result for the specific surface profile, not the product family. Then check the cleaning plan: an algae or grease film on a deck defeats any slip rating, so the maintenance regime is part of the specification.
Does composite decking get hot in the sun?
It gets warm, as any dark exterior surface does. Light colours stay noticeably cooler than dark ones. On a pool deck in a hot climate specify a light tone, or accept that barefoot use in full midday sun will be uncomfortable.
