SPC Flooring overview
SPC flooring is a rigid composite core of limestone powder and PVC with a decorative print and a transparent wear layer. The rigid core is what distinguishes it from flexible LVT: it does not telegraph subfloor imperfections, it tolerates temperature swings, and it clicks together as a floating floor without adhesive.
Wear layer thickness is the specification that matters most and the one most often omitted from a quotation. A 0.3 mm wear layer suits residential use; 0.5 mm suits commercial traffic. Quoting a floor "4 mm SPC" without stating the wear layer is quoting an incomplete product.
The floor is waterproof and dimensionally stable, which makes it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms and basements where laminate fails. Over underfloor heating it needs a slow commissioning ramp so the core does not stress during its first expansion cycle.

Where it is used
- Residential apartments and houses
- Retail, office and hospitality interiors
- Healthcare and education corridors
- Kitchens, bathrooms and basements
How it is installed
- Acclimatise cartons flat in the room for 48 hours at normal living temperature.
- Check the subfloor is flat to 2 mm over 2 m and dry; the rigid core will not bridge a hollow.
- Lay the first row against a spacer, engage the long edge, then click the short edge with a tapping block.
- Maintain an 8 mm expansion gap at every wall, column and pipe, and cover with skirting or profile.
SPC Flooring — buyer questions
What wear layer do I need?
For homes and low-traffic rooms, 0.3 mm is adequate. For shops, offices, schools and any area with trolley or foot traffic, specify 0.5 mm. Heavier commercial wear layers are available and quoted on request.
Can SPC flooring go over underfloor heating?
Yes, up to 28 °C surface temperature. Ramp the heating slowly over several days the first time — a fast ramp stresses the core during its first expansion cycle and can open joints permanently.
SPC or laminate?
SPC is waterproof and dimensionally stable; laminate is not. For kitchens, bathrooms and basements SPC is the correct choice. Laminate remains cheaper for dry residential rooms and has a warmer surface feel.
